As they fight to uncover the truth, they realize the virus is just the beginning of a much larger nightmare.
Review:
Resident Evil (2025) successfully blends the intense action and horror of the original game series with a modern cinematic approach. The film’s tone is darker and more suspenseful, as it immerses viewers in the tense, deteriorating world of Raccoon City. The director, Johannes Roberts, keeps the pacing tight and the tension high, constantly putting the characters in life-or-death situations that feel authentic to the franchise’s roots.
Kaya Scodelario delivers a strong performance as Claire Redfield, balancing strength and vulnerability as she leads the charge. Robbie Amell’s portrayal of Chris Redfield adds the necessary intensity and emotional depth, while Avan Jogia brings a fresh perspective to Leon S. Kennedy, making him a relatable and engaging character. The film also introduces Hannah John-Kamen as Jill Valentine, whose tough and resourceful nature helps to ground the film in its more action-driven moments.
The horror elements are appropriately gruesome, with the terrifying zombie encounters and the creation of the monstrous bioweapons, including the fearsome Licker. The visual effects, particularly in the scenes involving the undead and bioweapons, are top-notch, making for some truly chilling moments. The makeup and practical effects are also impressive, capturing the grotesque, disfigured nature of the zombies and bioweapons.
While the film stays true to the roots of the Resident Evil series, it also makes an effort to modernize the story, adding a deeper layer of conspiracy with Umbrella Corporation’s involvement in the outbreak. The pacing is quick, and while the story doesn’t delve as deeply into character backstories as some might like, it does a good job of setting up a thrilling, high-stakes adventure.
Final Thoughts:
Resident Evil (2025) is a refreshing reboot that delivers on both the horror and action fronts. While it may not be perfect in terms of character development, it effectively captures the essence of the beloved video game series. Fans of the franchise will appreciate the nods to the original material, while newcomers will find a gripping, fast-paced thriller that keeps them on the edge of their seat.
