The series is one of EA’s oldest franchises not affiliated with the EA Sports brand. The first title in the series, The Need for Speed, was released in 1994. The latest game, Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered, was released on November 6, 2020. In addition, a free-to-play mobile version was released in 2015.

Need for Speed: No Limits is under active development by Firemonkeys Studios, the developers of Real Racing 3. The series has been overseen by a number of notable teams over the years, including EA Canada, EA Black Box, Slightly Mad Studios, and Ghost Games. The franchise was critically acclaimed and, with over 150 million copies sold, is one of the most successful video game franchises of all time.

Due to its strong sales, the franchise has expanded into other media forms, including a film adaptation and licensed Hot Wheels toys.
